Collegiate Ministries

The ministries of Christian Challenge are the collegiate arm of the Colorado Baptist General Convention. These campuses and directors are partners to help Colorado students move from youth to future leaders in the church. As such, please be sure to pass on the names of any students coming to these campuses for follow-up and encourage them to contact the directors listed below before they arrive so they can make a smooth transition. Current stats show that we are loosing 80% in this transition and it will only be together that we narrow the gap. Here is the list of campuses and directors currently in Colorado:

Max Barnett serves as the State Collegiate Ministry Team Associate and is also available to contact at maxbarnett@gmail.com.

Air Force Cadets Encouraged at BSU Winter Retreat

By Bill Gandy

Colorado Springs- Sixty U.S. Air Force Academy cadets participated in the Baptist Student Union winter retreat Baptist Student Union winter retreat in January and learned about “Godly Relationship” from an alum.

Kirk, a 1969 graduate of USAF Academy, shared insights and scripture related to dating, marriage and sexuality, love and conflict. Drawing from his experience as a marriage and family therapist and Christian counselor, Kirk spent the majority of his time addressing issues cadets were concerned about. He asked each of them to write a question on a card and used session time to provide insight.

One particular question stood out: “Why is it so difficult for men and women to understand each other?”

God Meets Our Needs in Unexpected Ways

 By Cody Biby
Christian Challenge Director, Adams State College

Alamosa—Evangelism and ministry opportunities can come from unexpected places and offer surprises for the life of a collegiate minister. While sitting in the student center talking to students involved in our ministry and trying to build relationships, I started noticing a custodian who would hang around listening to our talks. It was one of those situations where you can tell someone is listening to what you’re talking about, but who spends time trying to look busy. It ended up being a little funny.

Student Learns to Live Outside Her Comfort Zone

 by Mary Pruett

Colorado School of Mines Christian Challenge

Golden—Amanda is a junior at the Colorado School of Mines and a young woman with a heart for God. She grew up knowing and loving God, but recently He placed in her a deeper passion and desire to share the good news with other students. She’s on our Christian Challenge leadership team and is leading a freshmen study, and yet she desires to do more.

During a one-on-one time with Amanda, I asked her if she had shared her testimony with anyone lately. She answered no and said she was too nervous to share. I encouraged her to write down her story and start practicing it with me during our meetings. After a few tries she was ready (albeit very nervous) to share how God had changed her life.

Christian Challenge's Motto at University of Colorado-Boulder

“Changing the World Through God-Honoring Relationships.” That is the motto for Christian Challenge, our Baptist campus ministry, at the University of Colorado. This statement reminds our students and staff that reaching the world with the gospel begins with genuinely caring for individuals.

One way we live out this motto has been through our caring for international students who attend our school. For instance, four new Japanese students recently attended a fellowship event in our director’s home. They were warmly welcomed, and students conversed with them the entire evening. Although they have been in the U.S. at least six months, none had been in an American home. It was a delightful evening that brought joy to their hearts as well as ours.

Collegiate Volunteer Ministries

Busy pastors and churches rely on volunteer help.  If we are going to impact our communities we need to find, train and utilize more and more volunteers.  Collegiate VOLUNTEER MINISTRIES has several avenues of recruiting volunteers for use in your church ministries:

Our message must be clear

By Ryan Lindsey
BSU Christian Challenge Director at Colorado State University, Pueblo

Pueblo -- This summer I had the opportunity to lead a Bible study with several students from Nepal.  They are a mix of Hindu, Buddhist, or something in between.  There were interested from a social study standpoint, but none of them became a Christian through the study.  The friendships that were formed have allowed for more personal discussions of what Christianity is outside of our assigned time.
