What happens to children after a disaster?
The Disaster Relief Team of the Colorado Baptist General Convention is currently developing a Temporary Child Care Unit to be used in emergency and disaster settings around the state and nation. This unit will be staffed with trained and screened volunteers to work in conjunction with other national agencies to meet the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of the smallest victims.
During a disaster, parents are responsible for securing emergency food and shelter for themselves and their children. Then comes the sometimes overwhelming task of rebuilding their lives. This can include finding new permanent housing, a new job, and new child care arrangements. The Disaster Relief Temporary Child Care Unit steps in right away to provide safety and security for the children as well as a sense of normalcy and routine. Parents can know their children are being well cared for while they take care of other business. In order to do this, the Unit must be equipped with appropriate toys, games, books and other items to care for infants to young school aged children. We are looking for partners in the community who are willing to donate items or money to stock the Temporary Child Care Unit initially as well as replace items as they become lost or damaged from use. The Colorado Baptist General Convention can provide a letter of receipt for donations. This is another way to invest in your community, and we appreciate any contribution you are able to make. None of us will ever know the profound impact that may be made on the lives of the victims of future disasters because of our contributions today.
